Why are classes important?

In Java, classes are the main organizational unit of a program. By their very nature classes tend to be self-contained. This leads to easier management of large projects, and easier maintenance of the software. You should spend some time thinking about these issues at the end of this unit (there is a question to that effect in the `reflection' section).
